The Wandering Quill, the new SIS literary magazine, was launched in May at the Soirée Annuelle, where members of the editorial team read a short story and a poem, and sold copies to the assembled parents.
The stylish publication is a rich mix of reviews, poems, fiction, photography and original drawings. The theme of the first issue was ‘beginnings’ and included a fascinating dossier on ‘La Francophonie at the Salon du Livre’ with profiles of Patrick Chamoiseau, Léopold Sédar Senghor and Assia Djébar.
As the magazine’s editorial article pointed out, it was “an occasion ...to explore a rich and vast linguistic, cultural and literary phenomenon that grows in importance, and is often not well understood by English-speakers. As bilinguals, lucky to understand both the English and French-speaking worlds, we benefit from having a particular point of view on this issue. La Francophonie is arguably itself a beginning, the appearance of a new era in literature where languages are no longer bound by borders, and where writing in a language is a matter of choice”.
The magazine obtained funding from the ‘Projet Passion’ of the Conseil d’Ile de France.
All the talented authors, editors, photographers and artists should be congratulated for the high quality of the contributions and the professional design of the magazine. English teacher Maryama Antoine provided crucial support in channelling and directing the students’ enthusiasm and energies.
The team is already busy planning the future development of the magazine and has other creative projects up its sleeve for next year.
