At the end of troisième (the final year of middle school), all SIS students take the nationally administered International option Brevet.
This examination differs from the regular French Brevet exam. In addition to taking tests set by the Ministry of Education in French, Math and History/Geography, candidates are also tested in the language of their section (English or German) in language and in history/geography.

the differences in content and
weighting between the regular Brevet
and the International option Brevet.

In addition to the end-of-year test, grades earned throughout the year in troisième count towards obtaining the Brevet. Each of ten subjects (French, math, biological sciences, physics, gym, art, music, technology and 2 foreign languages) is graded out of 20 points. Since the 2007 session a grade for behavior and effort has counted for 20 points as well, bringing the total number of points for in-class assessment to 220.
In optional subject matters such as Latin any points obtained above a grade of 10/20 are counted as extra points.
The national Brevet diploma is obtained with an average grade of 10, i.e., 210 points for the international version or 190 points for the regular version.

[1] as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages which describes 6 levels from A1 for beginners to C2 for perfect bilinguals. The level of SIS students in their section language is more than sufficient to satisfy this requirement. They can choose to use their section language or their foreign language to satisfy the requirement.
