Soirée post-bac américaine et anglaise

By Paddy Salmon and Brian Brazeau

On Tuesday October 4, Brian Brazeau of the English Department invited two representatives of the Franco-American Commission to speak about American Universities. Céline Ouziel and Lindsay Turlan spoke on the application process, SAT’s, and general intricacies of applying to American Universities. They also offered their services at their extensive documentation center in Paris (Commission franco-américaine 9, rue Chardin - 75016 PARIS). The now annual event was attended by over 60 people.

Visit by King’s College, Cambridge 5th 0ctober 2006

  • On 5th October, Dr Geoff Moggridge and Professor Iain Fenlon came to give an evening talk and answer questions on opportunities for students to study at Cambridge generally, and King’s College in particular.

Paddy Salmon organised the visit and started by outlining what was involved in considering applying to UK universities. He mentioned the importance of careful planning from 2nde onward and highlighted the comparative ease with which applications can be made through UCAS (www.ucas.co.uk) , the system for applying to universities in Britain.

Geoff and Iain then explained why Cambridge was such an attractive prospect and what was involved. The outstanding excellence of a university like Cambridge means that only pupils fairly secure of achieving a Mention Très Bien or just under should consider applying, but for those who are very bright, with a lot of enthusiasm both for their studies and for other interests besides, Cambridge (just like Oxford) has a lot to offer. And for a top, world-ranked university, it is still very reasonable in terms of finance.

For their part, the two Senior Tutors from King’s have expressed a lot of interest in the profile of our students, in particular with their bicultural identities and their training academically in “rigueur”. They had visited here in the Spring and were keen to work more closely and to create greater awareness of the particularities of Cambridge.

In particular they emphasised the importance of the college system there, which creates a two-pronged approach to learning - both in university faculties and in smaller, much more individualised, college teaching.

They also explained the Tripos system, whereby subjects can be changed after Part One, which is either at the end of the first or the second year. This leads to a very enriching flexibility of approach as regards to the disciplines chosen by students.

Finally, the diversity of opportunities (in sport, music, drama and hundreds of other pursuits), which are available at all levels was underlined.

The meeting was well attended with about 100 there, some from other schools. Many pupils were present and asked questions. There was plenty to think about and ponder over as students start to plan for their futures after the Bac.

We look forward to our next meeting, when “anciens élèves” are invited back to talk about their experiences and to help our students as they consider their options for Post-Bac studies.
