Soirée littéraire

Par Penny Rosenfeld, parent

Many voices thronged the American Library of Paris for the SIS’s literary evening, launching the fourth edition of the sumptuous literary magazine, The Wandering Quill. The eloquent voices of the editors-in-chief, Marjolaine Clough, Marie-Jeanne Merillet and Arthur Richier presented this year’s theme, ‘ An Original Odyssey’and awarded poetry prizes to Candice Morris (English) and Vivien Fontan (German).

The co-ordinator of the magazine , teacher and poet Maryama Antoine then orchestrated an open mike session which revealed the talents of students, teachers and the guest author Chip Martin, reading original works and occasional favourite pieces of poetry or prose.

Tremulous voices, audacious voices, inspired voices, nostalgic voices, voices dissolving into laughter, young voices hesitantly discovering an audience for the first time, voices empowered by the pleasure of poetry. German, French, British, American voices, all palpably different, all exulting in the pleasures of language.

We shut our eyes to listen to Keats’ poem La Belle Dame sans merci and opened our eyes and ears wide to listen to several original songs composed and written by students or teacher Ben See.

One voice was silent, and its absence keenly felt. Ms Antoine read a poem dedicated to the memory of John Noonan, father of Edward, the guest poet whose vibrant presence had lit up the first literary evening three years ago.

Many thanks to the Wandering Quill editorial board and Ms Antoine for nurturing the students’ creative voices and to the American Library of Paris for kindly providing a venue for this exciting event in the SIS calendar.
