Life Down Under

School and fun

By Meredith Roux (MLC, Melbourne)

At the Melbourne airport, I was quite apprehensive about meeting my Australian exchange student, but Stephanie was very friendly and her family was incredibly kind and considerate.

During the holidays, they took me to visit famous places in Australia such as “The Great Ocean Road” where we could see the famous “Twelve Apostles” rock formations. This was wonderful.

Stephanie and I also flew to Queensland; the warm weather was a nice change from Melbourne. The two week holiday was enjoyable before starting school.

MLC is very different from the schools I’ve attended in France. It was unusual to wear a uniform every morning, but I got used to it after a while.

I was happy to choose my own subjects at school because some of Stephanie’s were complicated and hard to understand. One of the subjects I chose and enjoyed was psychology.

I loved the year 11 formal. MLC students had invited a date and Stephanie had organised a date for me too. All the girls had gorgeous dresses and we had a wonderful time at the party.

When I entered the building, I was amazed by the beautiful room with about forty fancy tables and a dance floor at the back. The waiters brought us delicious food and after dinner, we danced all evening to the sound of techno music.

Stephanie had organised an after-party at her house, where as a small group of 10 danced some more, ending with a much welcomed sleepover with several of her girlfriends. My exchange was a great experience which I will never forget. I’d love to do it again. .
