As a base for our study of the topic of Modernism, one might be a little surprised by sleepy, old-fashioned Lion-Sur-Mer as our venue, but once again, that was fine by us and the pupils.
History-Geography had first bite this year at the (Normandy, of course) “apple” and it was a great pleasure for us all to have Judy Cellier back with us this year. Darren Griffith, Ross Black, Peter Rist and Michele May, who stayed all four days and worked overtime helping the pupils with oral preparation, worked their customary H-G magic. Darren, we have discovered, is not only teaching our pupils, but also a top French A-List actress (who must remain anonymous) learning to speak French with an English accent (for a new film) from recordings of Darren – a new angle, surely, on Français Langue Etrangere! (Sorry, Darren, but this is too good a story not to share!)
The pupils were a pleasure to teach and much hard work was accomplished, in spite of the brilliantly fine weather, which COULD have ruined our efforts! Tai Chi on the beach as usual started the day at 7.30 am and work continued all day until about 6 pm, with sometimes films later on for H-G.
The arrival of Ruairi McCann, Ben See and Lisa Higgins (weathering her first Revision Trip very proficiently) after two days saw the switch to English Literature with the new (“Make it new!” – Ezra Pound) “Modernism” topic amongst our other modules. The four days passed smoothly and rapidly and the pupils were enthusiastic, hard working and extremely responsive. Many came up at the end to thank us all and say how much they appreciated the work done and how much they felt that they had learnt. The proof of the pudding, as we say, is in the tasting, so we shall cross fingers until the beginning of July.
In the meantime, a big thank you is due to Betty Lau, who organized the trip and who also stayed for the full four days. It was a very positive, productive and stress-free trip for us. It is worth emphasising what a unique and pedagogically rich occasion this Revision Trip is. No other schools that I know in France attempt anything similar. Others may have a “6e Intégration trip”; we are the only ones I know to have a “Terminale Désintégration” one!
In 1993 we set out with only 17 pupils – this year they were 79! Long may this wonderful tradition last!
