International Exchange Australia

Procedure for French Participants

  • After the autumn half term (early November)

The parents will get a mail from the SIS announcing that the exchange is open

  • Before early December

The parents should contact one of the three volunteer parents to register their interest in the exchange

  • January

An interview is arranged with French candidates and their parents by the exchange co-ordinator at candidate’s home. Students are encouraged to consult the Australian schools’ Websites: MLC, Scots, Somerville and the SIS website.

They are required to complete and sign an application form with ID photo which is faxed to Australia.

  • March

Students are usually notified by the end of March if their application has been accepted.

Flights are booked.

  • April

Students are sent the names and e-mail addresses of their Australian correspondents.

They are encouraged to communicate regularly and to get to know each other. The families and correspondents usually have lots of questions to ask.

  • June

A meeting is held with all French participants and their parents by the exchange co-ordinator to discuss the exchange programme, expectations and rules. Parents usually want to know about presents, customs declaration forms for Immigration, Travel Insurance, Health Insurance, pocket money, uniforms, etc. It is also a good opportunity for them to meet the other parents and compare notes.

Medical history forms, Insurance forms and the Australian School policy documents are sent to the students to be completed and returned to the respective schools. For MLC participants, research topics should also be chosen and Michaela Plumb, the exchange co-ordinator at MLC in Australia informed.

  • June, July, August

4-6 week exchange.

  • September

Students are asked to give a 10 minute presentation about their experience in an Australian school to their English class. This presentation is beneficial for developing the student’s oral and public speaking skills. It also helps promote the Australian Exchanges by making the student’s peers aware of all the advantages an exchange can offer.

Students are also invited to write an article about their stay in Australia to be printed in InterSections and published on our web site.
