On the 10. october, Cindy Plecko, responsible for counselling students considering North American universities, invited the Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange to make presentations to a group of lycée students and their parents.
The evening was well attended and well received indicating a strong desire to learn about the North American option.
The Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange gave practical and precise explanations about the various steps one must take in order to complete an application. Information about letters of recommendation, SAT tests, and essay writing were all briefly mentioned.
Matthieu Navinel, french Teacher, spoke about the basic differences in philosophy towards higher education between the French (and European) versus the North American models. In France a student is asked to narrow down his/her field of study at the end of the 2nde year. In North America, especially at a liberal arts school, students are exposed to multiple disciplines and then asked to choose a major (specific area of study) after two years of study.
It was an extremely helpful description and should be fully understood before investigating various types of schools. Students and parents were encouraged to take full advantage of information on the internet as they begin to weigh the many options and opportunities SIS graduates have to pursue.
