Native American Day for P5M

By Connie Montrella

Wednesday morning, January 18th was an exciting one for the P5M class in English Primary.

Instead of their usual class they had a guest speaker, Jennifer Harlay, from a Native American Indian Association who enthralled them with the history, customs, beliefs and language of Indians today and in the past.

They practiced Indian dance steps as Indian music played and then sat in powwow fashion as the sacred feather was passed permitting each child to speak in turn. Some excited and impatient pupils still tried raising their hand to talk but soon realised that would not work and had to wait until the feather reached them.

The class finished by playing the Indian game of two people holding an orange between them with anything but their hands.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the morning and continue to talk about what they learned. They often leave class saying, "A-Soo-Ni", the Hopi word for, ’see you later,’ because Indians never say good-bye.

Indian Day is planned for the other P5 classes in April.
