My Stay in France

By Elise

The first thing that stood out for me in France was the food.

For a while there I wondered how the French managed to stay so slim when they are constantly surrounded by such yummy food; then I saw the stairs (leading up to the lycée). Nice.

Luckily I didn’t end up having to climb them every morning, so I have managed to keep my extra layers. This turned out to be extremely convenient, seeing as the average temperature here is around 3 degrees. Australia at the moment is around 38 degrees. But there sure wasn’t any snow there.

Seeing the city of Paris surrounded by large snowflakes has to have been one of the prettiest things I’ve seen, and of course, I forgot my camera. Nevertheless, even if I don’t have lots of photos to take home (except for ones of that yellow sticker of a man being graphically electrocuted which you guys have everywhere, awesome). I’ll have heaps of memories of all the crazy things about France.

People asking me if we eat kangaroos and koalas often in Australia, the cheese that smells like a foot; but has a surprisingly pleasant non-foot taste, finding out that Sudoku exists here too, and that not only is the lycee co-ed, but there is no uniform!

Nearly getting hit by cars everyday because you guys drive on the right side of the road.

School bells that sound like fire alarms; so that every time a class finishes I freak out.

Buskers at the metro who can actually play their instruments and music that is so stereotypically French you want to pick up a beret, striped t-shirt and baguette and start laughing like the chef from the little mermaid.

These are the memories that I’ll hold onto, so that every time someone mentions Paris, I can go "Yep, that’s the place where they drink hot chocolate for breakfast - FROM BOWLS."
