Harvard Model Congress Europe 2009

By Cindy Plecko and participating students

After months of preparation, 21 students from the classes of 2nde and 1ere took a trip to Brussels to participate in Harvard Model Congress. The conference took place over a three-day period, from March 21-23.

Our student delegates played roles ranging from US Senators and Congressmen to members of the UN Security Council, G-15, and World Bank. They worked along with students from all over the world to discuss and formulate policy. Some of the topics included gender inequality, the crisis in Darfur, hate crimes, food insecurity in the developing world, and EU-US relations.

Three of our students won awards: Jacques Kenedi, Claire Havet, and Thibaud Roujou de Boubee, but every one of our students did an outstanding job in preparing for the conference and presenting their ideas in committee.

Bravo to all!

Student comments:

HMCE was an amazing experience, you get to meet many people from various countries and learn about tones of different cultures. Being a journalist at this event was extremely interesting as it gave me a taste of what journalism actually is. Being on the journalism team taught me to work under pressure, which is very challenging and satisfactory once you are done. During the HMCE I also got to meet students from the Lycée de Sevres that I didn’t know before and who are really nice and fun. Julia Dejean

I believe the Harvard Model Congress was the most enriching adventure I have ever experienced. I have acquired new skills such as debating more efficiently, socializing with people from all over the world and being autonomous. I actually really felt I was being treated as an adult for once which really encouraged me to do my best. Moreover, this conference has taught me that you can pick any subject, any theme, any book, any work of art, may you have interest in it or not, the way you learn about it is what makes it appealing. I would also like to mention that we had so much fun discovering Brussels and making new friends. Audrey Plessas

The HMCE experience was nourishing in many aspects. My rhetoric skills have largely improved, through observation and effort. I think it is extremely important to know how to back up your arguments, not only for debating but also for life in general. I was deeply surprised by the degree of seriousness with which everything we said was listened to by the Harvard staff. I was so much into my role in the end I truly believed I was a member of the UNSC! Luna Cottis

I had an absolutely fantastic 3 days at Brussels and HMCE. What I enjoyed most of all was getting to know people from all over the world, being one of the representatives of a country (Kenya), looking for solutions to problems on a worldwide scale, and getting my voice heard on current issues. Isabella Hin

I think it was just AMAZING! The way the whole thing was set out was just engrossing, and even I, who claimed to hate politics and economy and what-have-you enjoyed it so much that I end up actually reading the 20minutes now in the mornings instead of stuffing at the bottom of my bag. Maud Koenig
