The Australian student reports

From frogs legs to foie gras

By Sophie Rushton

Our plane landed at Charles de Gaulle almost without me noticing the impact as we hit the runway.

Trundling along the tarmac to the terminal, I remember clearly the taste of excitement and anticipation in the air.

After saying our goodbyes to our traveling companions heading for Grenoble, the three of us; all the way from sunny Melbourne, were suddenly transplanted into another culture, so different from our own, which we would grow to love and appreciate over the 7 week stay.

Sure, the cold was a bit of the shock and the sky a little greyer than that of the summer we had left behind, but the opportunity to see Parisian life from the inside is an experience I feel very lucky to have lived.

My fabulous host family not only welcomed me warmly into their home, but generously gave up so much of their time to make sure I managed to capture a significant slice of the incredible Ville de Lumière.

Lucky enough to visit such places as the Louvre, Versailles, the Musée d’Orsay, and even go ice-skating on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower; not only was their hospitality at home excellent but I’m especially greatful for what was a fabulous week spent discovering the Cote d’Azur where I also got to briefly visit Italy and Monaco.

Although the language barrier has been a tough one; many embarrassing mistakes and <> sentence structures later, I can safely say that my French has definitely improved! The transition from classroom French to using the language as an everyday tool has been a massive leap - every day there were new words to learn and unknown irregular verbs to conjugate, but there was always the bonus of watching TV guilt-free, afterall, in French even Charmed was educational.

Thankyou to everyone at Sèvres for making my stay as memorable as it has been and especially to all my new friends who I feel very lucky to have spent time with here.

Although I can’t wait to be reunited with family and friends after what has been nearly two months; when I board the plane home, it will be with a touch of sadness that such a wonderful time has come to an end. It’s been great to learn so much and be exposed to so many different ideas - from frogs legs to foie gras, its all been so remarkably incredible.

Vive la France, et merci tout le monde pour tous !!!
