Engineering in the UK

Engineering in the UK : what to study ? Where ? advantages/disadvantages, compared to the French “track” ? Careers talk was given by Stephen Hudson, EDF and member of SETI.

  • Engineering can be inventing or creating in the field of technology but also in other fields.
  • It is related to science, yet an engineer is usually better paid than a scientist.
  • At EDF, the salary can depend on the number of years of experience as an engineer.
  • The first stage to becoming an engineer is to get a degree in engineering.

Degree course : four years of study to obtain a Masters in Engineering.

  • You can do these studies in a regular university (Cambridge, Imperial College, Manchester University).
  • Studies in the UK are less expensive than in the US.
  • Obtaining a degree will require studies in math, physics and chemistry.
  • It is easier to be accepted for engineering in the UK as the profession does not have as high a status as in France.
  • To enter an English university, you will be tested in English to see your level.
  • Engineering courses require extensive work yet this isn’t necessarily difficult.

The second stage is to get experience in this job.

  • Most companies require around 3 years of work experience in order to become a charted engineer.
  • These work years are reasonably well-paid (around £23,000 or 35,000 euros per year).
  • To become a chartered engineer, you must pass an exam.

The exam

  • In this exam, you must report your work experience.
  • You are interviewed about this experience.
  • Then, you must write about two essays.
  • It is a test of competence.
  • Once you have passed the exam, you are a charted engineer. Yet, you must pay every year to be apart of your institution. There are exeption because your company may pay your subscription for you.

The third stage is to become a chartered engineer.

  • You are not qualified as an engineer until you are about 25-27 years old. There are exceptions.
  • Once you are a chartered engineer, you are qualified as an engineer internationally.
  • You may work as an engineer in the US, China yet it is hard to find a job as an engineer in France after studies in England unless you are specialized in a certain field.

The talk was open to all pupils in the Anglophone and Germanophone Section of the Lycée. Conférence du 6 décembre 2006, compte-rendu rédigé par Cynthia Creze, élève de seconde.
