Dulwich Exchange

by Carol Cretaigne

What a week to spend in England ! The Dulwich exchange group found ourselves caught up in a political buzz, witnessing Britain’s first post war coalition government in the making ! Difficult to ignore the twists and turns of the election outcome.

Lucky we were also, to have wandered among swathes of bluebells in the Kent woodlands accompanied by poetry dedicated to this ephemeral beauty. All this, not even an hour away from the hussle and bussle of the city of London. From the depths of the underground to the hills of the Darent valley, spotting deer in the grounds of Knole House with it’s 365 rooms. « Just imagine girls, » our guide, Frank, said . « You wouldn’t ever have to pick your things up. You could just move room ». A teenagers dream !

A trip to the borough of Southwark to visit Shakespeare’s Globe theatre (and a private drama lesson with none other than Pat Short’s son Conor!) before exploring the Tate Modern Art Gallery was just one of the London days out. We soon became experts at negotiating the London Bridge underground station, with a particular fondness for the Krispy Kreme doughnut stand, placed judiciously right next to the ticket turnstiles. How could we resist ? Back in leafy Dulwich JAGS hosted with generosity and warmth and year 12 even entertained us with their celebration of their last day of school uniform.

So British….
