Cressida and the ill he had (2007)

Cressida and the ill he had: witty, ironical, touching,..

Marie Roux

Cressida and “The Ill He Had” views the last days of the Trojan war through the eyes of women.

From this angle, gods and warriors alike appear a bit deflated: they quarrel, they are faithless; they are so bad that tragedy becomes comedy, to the greatest pleasure of the audience, which was in stitches most of the time.

Witty, ironical, touching, the play showcased the talent of exquisite young actresses: Cressida, of course, determined and practical (when starry-eyed Troilus swears: “You will be mine till the end of time”, Cressida tartly retorts: “That’s rather a long time ...”); but also Helen, the beautiful first trophy wife; the jealous, haranguing Hera; or Aphrodite, an enchanting brunette version of Marilyn Monroe ... Cassandra also made stunning appearances.

For us parents, it is a yearly renewed joy to see the actors evolve and mature in roles which are always different but always perfectly cast.

Troilus, stomping offstage with a swooning Cressida in his arms, was a boy in last year’s Huck Finn (Buck) while Pandarus and Achilles developed in time a voice capable of bringing out all the nuances in their lines.

Zeus’s trajectory is quite impressive: he started as Puck, in Midsummer’s Night’s Virtual Reality, then became Huck’s King before landing on Mount Olympus - we can only wonder where he will be next year.

The one thing that does not change is the talent of the whole troupe and the dedication of the team capable of giving it life and the means to express itself. Out of nowhere were conjured up wonderful costumes and make-up, great directing and hot music (the musicians composed the songs for the play and set the house on fire during the interval!). They also overcame all the hurdles associated with such a large-scale venture. Long live the Play!

And the music...

The musicians are recording a CD Songs for Cressida, which has been awarded a grant by the Conseil Régional. It will be available by the end of June at the SIS and at Librairie Anagramme, 110 Grande Rue, Sèvres.
