Collège Poetry Contest Winners 2010

By Thaïs Cardon (sixième)

In text books there are fairy tales
The desks are silver eagles
All the grey buildings flow through the clouds
Our pens grow wings
The posters are flowers
Peelings on the wallpapers hide secret passages
In the instructions there are magic spells
And behind the board is the sea
Where our tests sail with the wind
Under the teacher’s desk are thousands of fairies
But to see these things there are two keys
Hidden somewhere in your head
They are imagination and belief
If you have them,
Keep them well and waste them not
And you will see
The magic, hidden
From those who do not stop and smell the roses.

THE OTHER WORLD
By Louise Horkay (cinquième)

Sitting on a wooden chair
Near the big green trees
I feel the fresh air
And I can still see the bees.

There is another world beside this
A world full of colors
Where snakes do not hiss
And there are no huge towers, only flowers.

How do I reach this other state?
It’s not easy, I know
There’s no need to wait
O heart! Feel the magic flow.

Night is day and day is night
All darkness has gone
A place filled with light
On everyone’s lips, a song.

The flame of friendship burns bright
And guides our every step
To bring us insight
Making us less inept. Why?

So that we can re-enter
Our world, with magic
Poems born in splendor
Will prevent all things tragic.

EVERYDAY MUSIC
By Alexis Baujat (quatrième)

I really thought the word "rhythm" appealed to you
All those melodies truly don’t mean anything?
This planet they name Rock ’n’ Roll isn’t a clue?
Well, your little inside bell at these words should ring
Because this charm which I speak about is music!
Music that cheers, music that cries,
Music that stands, music that lies,
This same music, elevated by moving wands
Can summon a mourning man to move up and dance,
A bored crowd to clap its hands,
A lone girl to inspire romance.

You don’t realize the immense enchantment!
When you finally understand, you will lament!
This music that brings thousands of people to sing
In theatres, on roads, at concerts and in the rain,
Isn’t something mankind can afford to be missing
Although it’s never too late to break down the chain!

Let your secretary go, blow up your office,
Burn down your neckties and stop spoiling and wasting;
May your everyday life not stop the big crisis,
Live the crazy life you never dreamed of living.
Be prepared to welcome what fights your greatest fears!
Be prepared to welcome what lightens your darkness!
Most of all, be ready to go, open your ears,
What you are getting in is daily happiness.

Take a deep breath, but be quick!
Only a few can finally reach this magic...

THE MAGIC OF MOMENTS
By Justine Lippens (troisième)

At 4:37 I’m in heaven
With two hours to go
My heart can rest
And savour what I like best
To lie back and consume
My pillow’s softness and my twilight room

At 7:00, what is there to love
Other than the waking moment
Where water washes my sleep away
Opens my mind
Brings me my day

At 7:15 I’m dressed and clean
My bag is ready to go
Rising from below
A smell so sweet
Against which nothing can compete
Such is my delight
In the instance of that first bite

I step off the bus, it’s 8:25
My bag weighs me down yet my eyes wander
Scanning the crowd to find another
Our eyes meet, we say "hello"
Both grounded, we are prepared to go

A far off rumble
My own thunder
It’s 11:45, my stomach implies with hunger
Pleasure sown from someone’s own green thumb
A fresh, invigorating meal to come

From 2 to 5, still stuck in the beehive
Of classrooms, teachers and grades
Sly smiles reside
Explosive laughs cannot hide
That with that final ring
Our hearts will surely sing

It’s 6 o’clock, right on the dot
My keys open the door
Light as a feather I now glide
My bag lies on the floor
For in my home I can now reside
Without the pressures of outside

My desk calls me for the final plea
To finish Maths, Spanish, and Biology
At 7:23, with one last stroke
I close my mind
Shut my book
Breathing in what waits below
A time to share and a meal in throw
It’s 7:33, time for family

At 8:21 the sun has long gone
Yet in other places it still shines
Despite distance and the passing of time
Old friends and memories within my heart still thrive
Messages and calls keep them alive

Lying in bed it’s twenty to ten,
Cloud softness cradling my head of lead
A whole magical world to behold
As my dreams do so gently unfold.
