Actively engaging young readers at the primary teacher training day.

by Carol Cretaigne

On February 9th, in Gambetta, teachers from a range of bilingual primary schools (including SIS of course!) were to be found busily sculpting, miming, whispering and sorting. How could this relate to English teaching?

Joanne Robinson (centre) and teachers.

Joanne Robinson, a UK teacher with a very kinesthetic approach, came to the SIS to share her ideas with primary staff. Using visually strong and physically active exercises, drawn from her experience in drama and music, Joanne’s work demands the pupil’s total involvement. Aimed at enriching writing strategies, the tasks engage children with the text by encouraging experimental learning.

Following the teacher training day, Joanne returned to Gambetta, this time to teach the SIS primary integrated children. They responded with great enthusiasm and can be seen below in action, recreating visual and emotional aspects of the Iron Man.

Many thanks to Jenny Bennitt for working so hard to coordinate both days!
