  • "Great Expectations" : c’est le PLAY 2009 !

by Paddy Salmon and the producers

This year’s play, written and adapted from Dickens’ novel by Paddy Salmon will be performed in April. “Great Expectations”, first published in instalments in 1860 and Dickens’ 13th novel, is in many ways his most prodigiously imaginative and complete novel, in which he carefully revisited his own troubled childhood, already explored in such depth in “David Copperfield”.

    Gulliver’s Travels (2008)

  • Gulliver’s Travels: From Brogue to Rap

    by Olivier Kaiser

What would a year at the SIS be without the annual Play? As incomplete as a Lord without his wig, as unsatisfying as a great meal without a vintage wine, as disappointing as a country’s president without a hint of statesmanship. Luckily for the SIS community, Paddy Salmon and his team of co-directors worked their magic again this year and put together yet another memorable rendition of a classic piece of English-language literature

  • Gulliver’s Travels: allegorical satire, utopian fantasy and comic thriller novel altogether.

    By Paddy Salmon

Gulliver is an innocent Englishman, who is constantly washed up in strange lands, where he finds not only himself but his ideas and his culture under attack. Often seen as a children’s book, the Travel are more an allegorical political satire full of Rabelaisian humour.

    Huck Finn (2006)

  • I found it odd at first that we had to shout the lines !

"This year I was entering 4ème, the first year where you get the chance to be in the play. I auditioned, far from expecting I would get such a big role as Huck 1..." Read Harold Cretaigne’s (Huck 1) and Erwan Rolland’s (Huck 2) accounts. Don’t miss other actors’ memories, nor the first review of the play.

    A Midsummer Night’s Virtual Reality (2005)

  • Introduction

Written, produced and directed by Paddy Salmon Co-directed by Pat Short, Vicki Salmon, Ben See and Brian Brazeau « Let’s rock the ground... » says Oberon. And that’s just what we aim to do...... This year’s play is a home-brewed comedy scripted by Paddy Salmon (with a little help from the Bard!) A class of pupils with their harassed young teacher is trying to work out an “Interactive Computer Programme” based on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” When the computer malfunctions, they are (...) 19-05-06

  • Review by Adrien Pavageau

A traditional aspect of the play was the fear which dangled over our heads starting about two weeks before it. Usually we were afraid that we would never get round to learning those lines, that our costumes were lousy, that the play wouldn’t be as great as last year, or maybe we were apprehensive because Pat Short had just shown us the pink tutu with lace wings we were supposed to wear. This year these worries were not mine anymore, and I understood that they were rather futile. Every year (...) 19-05-06
  • Review by a parent : Barbara TRUDEAU

The Tradition of Drama at Sèvres As I eagerly settled into my seat for the Wednesday night dress rehearsal of the annual SIS theatrical production I was reminded of my early enquiries about the SIS four years previously, when my son was still in CM 2. I recalled walking into the SIS semi-underground office and meeting Pat Morgenroth for the first time. As I scanned her office it was the SIS play posters, prominently displayed around the upper reaches of the office, that caught my eye. In (...) 19-05-06
  • Review by a parent: Peter Hammet

The SEL in February was the setting for the English Language Department’s annual festival, the School Play, with over 100 participants: actors, musicians and stage hands from 5ème to Terminale - not to mention a gaggle of parents in the “admin” roles. This year, Paddy Salmon with a little help from Will Shakespeare gave us a “Midsummer Night’s Virtual Reality”. The play started with a touch of reality (the computer program breaking down!) and moved rapidly into a world of fantasy and fairies, of (...) 19-05-06
  • A ’national’ student

The play was very interesting even if I didn’t understand all. I liked a lot the costumes and the scenery, they were beautiful ! I thought the internationals were very good at theater, music, and singing (especially during the interlude of the play). Doing a play is an excellent idea and I hope they will continue ! • Music in the Play

According to William Shakespeare, "If music be the food of love, play on!". I must admit that it would be pretentious to consider music like the food of theatre. However, good pieces of music seem to be important in the annual play. This year, “A Midsummer Night’s Virtual Reality” was not an easy comedy to accompany with musicians. The thing that was most difficult was to compose for a wide range of ages. We knew that our predecessors generally prefer Frank Sinatra or Miles Davis. On the (...) 19-05-06
  • Reviews by Chaville 4ème

A Midsummer Night’s Virtual Reality is a fascinating play. I was charmed from the beginning to the end of it. In this show there are lots of laughs and the story is so entertaining that I could not close my eyes. A lot of moments are so funny that I found it hilarious. First of all there was Bottom. He is one of the mechanicals and is a real dolt. The actor Joel Kalvarisky, who plays Bottom, acts so well that we think he is actually Bottom himself. The reason I like Bottom is because he has (...) 19-05-06
  • A Puck’s eye view...

It all began when, in October, it was announced that the play to be preformed was Shakespeare’s Midsummer’s Night Dream with an unexpected twist. Auditions were called, and noting the success of last year’s stunning performance, students stampeded to these try-outs. After the casting, we actors were split up into small groups classed by our role in the play for the first rehearsals, which took place in the Lycée de Sèvres. During these preliminary rehearsals I took my time to try out the many (...) 19-05-06
