The Australian Exchange programme was set up in 1998 by primary teacher Sandra Boussageon. A handful of students from grades 9, 10 and 11 partake each year in this cultural and linguistic exchange.
The programme is a reciprocal one. The exchanges which last either four or six weeks (depending on the school), take place over the summer holidays from July to August for SIS students. The Australian students arrive in 3 groups in early or mid December and stay till mid or end of January.
In all cases the students attend classes and participate in the daily activities of their exchange partner. There is usually a two week holiday break in either country over this period for some sight-seeing. Students are matched as closely as possible with regard to interests, hobbies and family background.

The programme was initiated with an exchange between a girls’ private school, Methodist Ladies College (MLC) in Melbourne, and the Sèvres International Section. This exchange with MLC has been very successful and is still current. The duration of the exchange is 6 weeks. Students generally spend two weeks on holiday with their correspondent followed by four weeks in classes.

These exchanges were initiated (Somerville House in 2007 and Scots in 2011) to answer a growing demand from students and parents for a shorter exchange and a boys’ school. Both programmes offer a cultural and language exchange for 4 weeks during July for the French participants.

For students with a sense of adventure, the Australian Exchange Programme offers an opportunity to improve their English, discover a new country and experience the warm and friendly hospitality extended by Australian families.
Brochures and pamphlets about our partner schools can be found on the magazine stands in the International libraries. Further information is available on the individual school web sites.
Round-trip fares to Australia cost between 1250€ and 1350€ including airport taxes. Students are required to travel together to facilitate organisation between and within the schools. Students also prefer to travel in groups as the flight is long (22-26 hours) with one stopover. The time difference is 8-10 hours depending on the time of the year.
Applications for the current school year open in November and close at the end of January.
| To be consistent with a language exchange our Australian schools require that ALL members of the host family speak French during the students stay in France. Naturally, only English is spoken in the Australian homes. |
