Everyday Magic

For the year 2009-10, we decided to call upon the imagination and creativity of our fellow thinkers by choosing a theme that barely leaves any boundary: Magic.

Yet, one rule was set. However wildly enchanted their works may be, our writers should reveal their true selves through the expression of what each considers Magic to be in their everyday life.

Our aim was not to restrict the meaning of the word by choosing an oxymoron as a title, but rather to allow the most colorful dreams and fantasies to interfere with reality, which is often grey-shaded. The title, through the interaction between "everyday" reality and “Magic”, reflects the influence of mysterious forces on the most mundane events.

What are these sparks of magic that make every moment different from another and allow you to forget rationality, for a short instant, and give way to pure dreaming?

Discovering a powerful work of art? Hearing an inspiring quotation? Encountering an unexpected someone? Magic can also be discovered, not only in things we come across, but also through our way of looking at the world, for our mind’s eye can turn the most banal of moments into a true enchantment.

As magic unveils itself in so many ways in everyday life, we aspire to gather these revelations, from the depths of mind and imagination, into this year’s issue.
